แม้ไม่พิจารณาเหตุผลด้านอื่น มองเฉพาะในแง่สังคมอย่างเดียว ก็จะเห็นว่า พุทธกิจที่พระพุทธเจ้าทรงบำเพ็ญเพื่อประโยชน์สุขแก่สังคมสมัยนั้น จะสำเร็จผลดีที่สุดก็ด้วยการทำงานในบรรพชิตเพศเท่านั้น
พระองค์จึงได้ทรงชักจูงคนชั้นสูงจำนวนมากให้ละความมั่งมีศรีสุข ออกบวช ศึกษา และเข้าถึงธรรมที่ทรงสอนแล้ว ร่วมทำงานอย่างเสียสละอุทิศตนเพื่อประโยชน์สุขของประชาชน ด้วยการจาริกไปเข้าถึงคนทุกชั้นวรรณะ และทุกถิ่นที่จะไปถึงได้ ทำให้บำเพ็ญประโยชน์ได้อย่างกว้างขวาง
อีกประการหนึ่ง คณะสงฆ์เองก็เป็นแหล่งแก้ปัญหาสังคมได้อย่างสำคัญ เช่น ในข้อว่า ทุกคน ไม่ว่าจะเกิดในวรรณะใด เมื่อบวชแล้วก็มีสิทธิเสมอกันทั้งสิ้น
ส่วนเศรษฐี คฤหบดี ผู้ยังไม่พร้อมที่จะเสียสละได้เต็มที่ ก็ให้คงครองเรือนอยู่เป็นอุบาสก คอยช่วยให้กำลังแก่คณะสงฆ์ในการบำเพ็ญกรณียกิจของท่าน และนำทรัพย์สมบัติของตนออกบำเพ็ญประโยชน์สงเคราะห์ประชาชนไปด้วยพร้อมกัน
การบำเพ็ญกรณียกิจทั้งของพระพุทธเจ้า และของพระสาวก มีวัตถุประสงค์ และขอบเขตกว้างขวางเพียงใด
จะเห็นได้จากพุทธพจน์ ครั้งแรกที่ทรงส่งสาวกออกประกาศพระศาสนาว่า
“ภิกษุทั้งหลาย เธอทั้งหลายจงจาริกไป เพื่อประโยชน์และความสุขของชนเป็นอันมาก เพื่ออนุเคราะห์ชาวโลก เพื่อประโยชน์เกื้อกูล และความสุขแก่ทวยเทพ และมนุษย์ทั้งหลาย”
พุทธธรรมนั้นมีขอบเขตในทางสังคมที่จะให้ใช้ได้ และเป็นประโยชน์แก่บุคคลประเภทใดบ้าง
พึงเห็นได้จากพุทธพจน์ในปาสาทิกสูตร (Cause of faith : เหตุให้เกิดความเลื่อมใส ) ซึ่งสรุปความได้ว่า
พรหมจรรย์ (คือพระศาสนา) จะชื่อว่าสำเร็จผลแพร่หลายกว้างขวาง เป็นประโยชน์แก่ชนเป็นอันมาก เป็นปึกแผ่น ถึงขั้นที่ว่า เทวดา และมนุษย์ประกาศไว้ดีแล้ว ต่อเมื่อมีองค์ประกอบต่อไปนี้ครบถ้วน คือ
๑. องค์พระศาสดา เป็นเถระ รัตตัญญู (nighttime knowledgeable people ผู้รู้ราตรี คือผู้เก่าแก่ รู้กาลนานมีประสบการณ์มาก รู้เหตุการณ์มาแต่ต้น) ล่วงกาลผ่านวัยมาโดยลำดับ
๒. มีภิกษุสาวก ที่เป็นเถระ มีความรู้เชี่ยวชาญ ได้รับการฝึกฝนอบรมอย่างดี แกล้วกล้าอาจหาญ บรรลุธรรมอันเกษมจากโยคะ สามารถแสดงธรรมให้เห็นผลจริงจัง กำราบปรัปวาท (ลัทธิที่ขัดแย้ง วาทะฝ่ายอื่น หรือคำสอนนอกรีตผิดเพี้ยน) ที่เกิดขึ้น ให้สำเร็จเรียบร้อยโดยถูกต้องตามหลักธรรม และมีภิกษุสาวกชั้นปานกลาง และชั้นนวกะ (Newcomer ผู้ใหม่) ที่มีความสามารถเช่นเดียวกันนั้น
๓. มีภิกษุณีสาวิกา ชั้นเถรี ชั้นปานกลาง และชั้นนวกะ ที่มีความสามารถเช่นเดียวกันนั้น
๔. มีอุบาสก ทั้งประเภทพรหมจารี และประเภทครองเรือนเสวยกามสุข ซึ่งมีความสามารถเช่นเดียวกันนั้น
๕. มีอุบาสิกา ทั้งประเภทพรหมจารินี และประเภทครองเรือนเสวยกามสุข ซึ่งมีความสามารถเช่นเดียวกันนั้น

เพียงแต่ขาดอุบาสิกาประเภทครองเรือนเสียอย่างเดียว พรหมจรรย์ ก็ยังไม่ชื่อว่าเจริญบริบูรณ์เป็นปึกแผ่นดี ความตอนนี้แสดงว่า พุทธธรรมเป็นคำสอนที่มุ่งสำหรับคนทุกประเภท ทั้งบรรพชิต และคฤหัสถ์ คือ ครอบคลุมสังคมทั้งหมด และลักษณะทั่วไปของพุทธธรรมนั้น สรุปได้ ๒ อย่าง คือ
๑. แสดงหลักความจริงสายกลาง ที่เรียกว่า “มัชเฌนธรรม” หรือเรียกเต็มว่า “มัชเฌนธรรมเทศนา” ว่าด้วยความจริงตามแนวของเหตุผลบริสุทธิ์ ตามกระบวนการของธรรมชาติ นำมาแสดงเพื่อประโยชน์ทางปฏิบัติในชีวิตจริงเท่านั้น ไม่ส่งเสริมความพยายาม ที่จะเข้าถึงสัจธรรมด้วยวิธีถกเถียงสร้างทฤษฎีต่างๆ ขึ้นแล้วยึดมั่น ปกป้องทฤษฎีนั้นๆ ด้วยการเก็งความจริงทางปรัชญา
๒. แสดงข้อปฏิบัติสายกลาง ที่เรียกว่า “มัชฌิมาปฏิปทา” อันเป็นหลักการครองชีวิตของผู้ฝึกอบรมตน ผู้รู้เท่าทันชีวิต, ไม่หลงงมงาย, มุ่งผลสำเร็จคือความสุข, สะอาด, สว่าง, สงบ, เป็นอิสระ ที่สามารถมองเห็นได้ตั้งแต่ในชีวิตนี้ ในทางปฏิบัติ ความเป็นสายกลางนี้ เป็นไปโดยสัมพันธ์กับองค์ประกอบอื่น ๆ เช่น สภาพชีวิตของบรรพชิต หรือ คฤหัสถ์ เป็นต้น
